Clues to early detection of baby illness
It is very important for you to know that sluggishness and lack of interest in taking feeds may be the only early manifestations of sickness in a baby during the first few weeks of his life.
He may have no fever, cough, vomiting, loose motions or other commonly recognized symptoms of disease.
If a baby , who has otherwise been active and taking his feeds well, suddenly becomes inactive, unusually quiet and ceases to take his normal feeds, he may be quite sick and you should promptly consult your paediatrician.
Sometimes, a subtle change in his behavior or looks may be the only early indication of his illness.
Your own instinct and observation-finding him ‘different’ from his usual self- may be the best guide.
If you think your baby is ill, even if you cannot hesitation. You should not wait for forever or any other specific symptoms to develop.
You should also seek early medical advice if your baby shows any one of the following symptoms:
1. If he is breathing fast or he has a catchy breathing;
2. If he looks unwell and his body and limbs are felt to be unusually floppy;
3. If he continues to cry persistently for long periods;
4. If he tends to choke on taking his first feed after birth.
A doctor should, of course, be consulted early if the baby develops, fever, vomiting, loose motions, fits or any other commonly understood manifestations of disease.
There is however no reason for you to worry unnecessarily. While you look after your baby with reasonable care and vigilance, you must remain calm and confident. Do not get perturbed by a sneeze, rash or any other minor problem in your baby.
Despite their delicate frame and frail appearance, an over whelming majority of newborn babies remain healthy and do not require any major medical assistance.
